Christmas night from December 31 to January 1 falls on the most stringent time - Orthodox forty-day fast in honor of the Nativity. Old style everything went on as usual: Advent preceded the feast of Christmas, soon after which the people celebrated the New Year.

It is fair to say that we - not the only ones happy "owners" of this holiday. Old New Year is celebrated in many countries of the former Soviet Union: in Latvia, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Georgia. And in Serbia, Montenegro, Greece and Romania - in these countries religious festivals are also celebrated according to the Julian calendar. Old New Year celebrate also in the north-east of Switzerland, in some German-speaking cantons and in a small Welsh community in Wales in the west of the UK. The inhabitants of these places in the XVI century, did not accept the reforms of Pope Gregory and still celebrate in the night from 13 to 14 January.
